How to Play Each Game

Rules, controls and scoring for Brick Breaker.

Brick Breaker

A field of green bricks sits at the top of the screen inside grey walls. Grey walls never break. There is a narrow way in at the bottom of the field: bounce the ball into it with your paddle and it rips through the green, breaking every brick it touches.

Keep the ball from falling past your paddle. When every ball is gone you lose a life; you have 3. Break every brick the ball can reach to clear the level. There are 26 levels, each a different shape in its own colours. Level 1 is one wide gap; later levels hide bricks in rooms, on floors and inside boxes that only open through yellow doors, with a faster ball and a smaller paddle. Each level you clear unlocks the next on the start screen.

Technical parameters

  • Power-ups are round tokens that drop from yellow bricks every time and from other bricks now and then. They fall slowly: catch them with the paddle to use them. A token with a red ring is one to dodge. While a timed one is running, its token sits under the paddle with a ring that shrinks as the time runs out.
  • Where the ball lands on the paddle sets its angle: the middle sends it straight up, the ends send it off to the side.
  • Input: move the mouse or drag your finger to move the paddle; click or tap to launch. Left and right arrow keys move it too, Space launches. The speaker button at the top turns the sound off and on.
  • Score: 10 per brick, 50 per power-up caught. Score and lives carry over to the next level.

Tip

  • Stats: Score, Lives, Balls, and the level you are on with how much of it is gone.
